If you have encountered Mabel at any point during the last six months, it would have been difficult to miss that she has her fifth birthday coming up and is ever so slightly excited about it. We’re still a month away and the question of how many days it is until her birthday is now being asked at a frequency I’m pretty sure any sane person would find difficult to handle. So I had the idea of making her a birthday countdown calendar. It’s a nice way of adding a bit of extra excitement to the build up, get her practising her double digit numbers, and hopefully alleviate some of the ‘how long is it until my birthday?’ questions – triple win!
Here’s how we made Mabel’s birthday countdown calendar…
I made a template on the computer and printed it out twice. If you want to use my template just pop your email in the box bellow and I’ll get it sent straight out to you (don’t forget to check your spam folder in case it gets a bit lost on its way).
Each sheet has 18 boxes on it but you can chop the boxes up so you can countdown as many days as you like, Mabel had 32 days until her birthday when we made this so we used two sheets. We started at number 32 (she got a bit muddled writing the first box), and then numbered them backwards all the way down to 1. It was at this point I realised that 2 x 18 doesn’t make 32. Never mind, Mabel had started randomly chopping them up anyway, we can piece together the right amount when we stick them on the backing paper.
You could just cross the numbers off with a pen each day, but we decided to make a little flappy door out of each number that Mabel could tear off each morning. So for each square we cut around three sides of the box and left it attached just at the top edge. Then we glued down around the outside, being careful not to glue the doors, and stuck the paper onto coloured backing paper.
And that’s it! We stuck it on the wall and Mabel took great delight in ripping off the first number and declaring it only 31 sleeps until her birthday!
As you can see our birthday countdown calendar was a group effort and I’m sure you could make yours much neater than mine! Mabel loves it though which is the main thing and I love that she can work out for herself how many days she has left until her birthday.
